Comet Element Tutorial

Hello beautiful beaders!
Here follows the tutorial for my Comet element. You can use this in many different ways, two of wich I will detailed in future posts.
I hope you try this and enjoy it. I'm always happy to see your creations on any media and thank you in advance for credit on the design. Feel free to share this.
More pictures of this can be found in this this post.

Small Comet Element

Materials (for one small element)
- 1g 11/0 japanese seed beads
- 12 superduo beads, can be half of one color and half of another color (SD)
- 6 Czech 2 hole triangles
- 6 Rizo beads
- 6 czech Lilly petals or Daggers or Pip beads
- Thread of your choice (I use Toho OneG)

Round 1:

On 120 cm of thread pick up a repeating pattern of a SD and an 11/0 beads six times. Pass through all the beads again to form a circle. Tie a knot between the working thread and tail and pass through the next SD in the circle. Pass back through the outer, empty hole of the SD.

Note you will begin working in the opposite direction

Round 2:

Step 1: Pick up an 11/0, a SD and an 11/0 and pass through the outer hole of the next SD from round 1.

Repeat this step five times to complete the round. Retrace the threadpath of this round once to secure. Exit a SD added in this round and pass through its outer empty hole.

Note: you will begin working in the opposite direction

Round 3

Step 1: Pick up an 11/0, a triangle RH, three 11/0s. Pass back through the free hole of the triangle (LH, toward the beadwork), pick up an 11/0 and pass throuh the next SD in round 2 (outer hole)

Repeat this step five times to complete the round.

Pass through the first 11/0, triangle RH and two 11/0s added in this round.

Round 4

You will now be working on the back of the element

Step 1: Pick up an 11/0, a Rizo bead and an 11/0. Pass through the next middle 11/0 on the back of the next triangle.

Repeat this step five times to complete the round. Pull the thread moderately to tighten the beads in this round. Retrace the thread path of this round and pull the thread tight. A star pattern will form on the back and the rizos will naturally tend to position themselves in the pattern shown.

Note: At this step, if desired, before pulling the thread tight you could slide in a rivoli or a round crystal for extra sparkle or even a reversible element. More of the rivoli will be showing on the back.

Round 5

Step1: Pick up a Lilly petal (or a dagger, or Pip, or maybe even Rizo ) and pass through the next 11/0, SD, 11/0. Repeat this step five times to complete the round. Retrace the thread path in this round to reinforce.

Note: The Lilly petals also have a front side and a back side and the design works with them either way, just make sure you pick them all up the same way. I have placed them with the concave side facing the center of the element.

Large Comet Element

Materials (for one large Comet element)

-          1.2g 11/0 japanese seed beads

-          12 superduo beads, can be half of one color and half of another color (SD)

-          6 Czech 2 hole triangles

-          12 Rizo beads

-          6 czech two hole daggers, 5/16mm (2HD)

-          Thread of your choice (I use Toho OneG)

Work Rounds 1 to 4 as before in the Small Comet Element.

Work Round 5 as before, but pick up a two hole dagger (1st hole) instead of the Lilly Petals.

Weave through beads to exit the first 2HD (1st hole) added in the previous round.

Round 6

Step 1: Pick up three 11/0s (in the example shown I used two colors of beads) and pass through the 2nd (outer) hole of the 2HD.

Step 2: Pick up another three 11/0s and pass back through the 1st (inner) hole of the same 2HD. Pass through the next 11/0, SD, 11/0, 2HD 1st (inner) hole.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 five times to complete the round. Weave through beads to exit a middle 11/0 in a group of three added in this round, with the needle pointing toward the beadwork.

Round 7

Pick up a Rizo and pass up (with the needle pointing away from the beadwork) through the next middle 11/0  from Round 6. Pass through the next 11/0, 2HD, and two 11/0s.

Repeat this step five times to complete the round.

Round 8

Turn over the Element to work on the back.

Weave through beads to exit a middle Round 6 11/0 just before a Rizo.

Pick up three 11/0s and pass through the next middle Round 6 11/0, on the other side of the Rizo. This stitch will hold up the Rizos.

Repeat five times to complete the round.

If desired you can also repeat this last stitch on the front of the rizos to keep them from flopping in the front. I kind of liked them to have a little movement so left them this way.

Secure the thread and trim.

You now have a variety of elements to play with.

Be sure to check back soon for the rest of the instructions!
